Summary of the role 

The business relies heavily on an MRP system to operate successfully. The operations department function is to provide the primary data to that system. Only then is it possible to operate a profitable manufacturing process. Specifically the role covers the following:

Reporting to the Operations Manager of TSS Bridgwater, the individual will develop detailed routes in which parts are to be manufactured to suit the requirements of the customer and the availability of equipment/machinery.

The job holder will ensure that resources are efficiently and effectively applied to ensuring that we meet all (immediate and ultimate) customer requirements.

Job scope includes: (1) Manufacturing support; (2) Production planning and scheduling, (3) Quotation preparation calculations.

Tasks and responsibilities 

  • New item planning– Develop and implement production plans (BOM+Routing) to maximize the use of the organization’s resources and meet established production specifications and schedules; volume, cost, and wastage targets; and quality standards. This also includes creating variable machine programs to suit the part.
    • Check manufacturing drawings prior to planning and suggest improvements/corrections as necessary.
  • Product costing – produce product costings including requesting prices from approved suppliers & evaluating product inspection drawing for quote purposes.
  • Adjust manufacturing routes to accommodate design changes and other suitable requests from production. The individual must determine whether the requested alteration is suitable and effective for future production.
    • This also includes processing revision change documents & pass to next relevant team.
  • Liase with sales, quality, design & site services engineering teams to resolve production issues including involvement in the production quarantine process.

Education and experience

  • Education background in engineering
  • Extensive experience of (component/part) manufacturing
  • Skilled and experienced technical engineer
  • Able to analyse problems logically
  • Highly self-motivated & self-managed
  • Able to operate with a high degree of autonomy and initiative

  • Number of line orders to be planned & earliest delivery date required in that listing
    • Aim is to have all new items planned 3-4weeks in advance of first delivery.
    • Engineer also needs to be able to recognize when jobs require longer due to supply/complexity requirements & react accordingly.
  • Number of quotes outstanding
  • Aim is to have no quote outstanding for more than 5 working days.
